Chapter Philanthropy
As individuals with time, talents and treasures, Kappas first support our sisters; second, we participate in local service projects; and third, we serve the greater good. Every fall the members of the Zeta Theta Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma participate in "Do It Day." a campus-wide community service effort focused on volunteering at local institutions including schools, parks and places of worship.
In October, the entire chapter comes together to support the Hillel House when they host their annual Pink Shabbat for Breast Cancer awareness. We love to attend and sell shirts to help raise money, but it is also so much fun to bake pink challah! Also in October, the sisters participate in Halloween on Vernon Street. Sisters chaperon kids from the Hartford area as they trick-or-treat along Vernon Street. We also team up with Psi Upsilon to host fun Halloween games and face painting for the children.
During the spring semester, the members of Kappa Kappa Gamma participate in Trinity College's Relay for Life, which takes place at the end of April. This is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity, Relay for Life is an overnight event that brings communities together to learn about, and raise money for, the fight against cancer. This is Trinity College’s largest philanthropy event of the year, and Kappa is always one of the largest participating teams. On the night of the event, we hold a table where we try to raise additional money for the American Cancer Society.
Our most recent philanthropy event, Kappa Kisses, was a huge success this year! These little bundles of Hershey kisses for Valentines Day raised over $1,000 for ConnSACS – Connecticut Sexual Assault Crisis Services. This is an incredible coalition of individual sexual assault crisis programs that work to end sexual violence through victim assistance, community education, and public policy advocacy. We came up with this idea because around the Valentine's Day holiday there is a huge emphasis on relationships, love, sex, appreciation, etc., on campus and in the media, so we felt that it would be a perfect opportunity to help raise awareness for the importance of consent and sexual violence on a day that celebrates love. You can expect to see us every year around this time outside of our main dining halls accepting any donation or purchase of a Kappa Kiss. It is such a great event and we are proud to represent it. Thanks to everyone who helped us raise all this money, it has been our most successful year!
Kappa Kappa Gamma has a large presence at the Achieve Hartford! Community Spelling Bee. Sisters help plan for the event, set up on the day of the event and accommodate the patrons of the spelling bee when they arrive. In addition, this year we became involved in the Urban Youth Squash Program through Capitol squash, which focuses on proving urban youth with life-changing opportunities through this squash, intensive education support, mentoring and community service activities.
